In the latest study conducted by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, 670 million dollars annually are currently being spent in the area of financial literacy. With over 800 financial literacy curriculums in the marketplace: there is very little difference between most of the offerings being promoted. In an article written in the Jan/Feb 2014 issue of Pacific Standard, Lewis Mandell, a founder of the modern financial literacy movement states, “The financial literacy movement has made little progress.”
Our 8 years of research has confirmed Mandell’s conclusion as well. We have also discovered that educational access alone does little to motivate and improve an individual’s grasp and application of those newly learned concepts. In order for a person to redirect the course of their life, they must have a compelling reason to do so. For new information to become integrated into one’s life, individuals must establish concrete reasons “why” this new information will benefit them. SpendSmart helps people to find a compelling reason to redirect the course of their life and then works with them until they reach their goal.
